Hakone-juku: A Lodging Stop that Enlivened the Shores of Lake Ashinoko

According to the Shinpen Sagami no Kuni Fudoki-ko (New Topography of Sagami Province), Hakone-juku was established in 1618 (Genna 4) to provide a lodging stop for travelers crossing the Hakone Mountains. Originally, the shogunate intended to designate Moto-Hakone, a town that had long prospered as a temple town for Hakone Gongen, as the post station. However, this plan did not come to fruition, and instead, a post station was established on the shores of Lake Ashinoko. Throughout the Edo period, Hakone-juku was unique in that it was governed by two lords, despite being a single post station. This dual governance structure was unprecedented among the stations of the Tokaido.

"Mishima-juku" A Flourished Shrine Town of Mishima Taisha

Mishima has thrived as the center of Izu area since ancient times, and was very lively as a town in front of the Mishima Myojin Shrine, currently known as Mishima Taisha. In 1601, Tokugawa Ieyasu established the shukueki(post town) system, with Mishima-juku designated as the 11th post town from Nihonbashi, Edo (Tokyo). After that, the third Shogun Iemitsu instituted Sankin-Kotai,(alternate attendance) and the number of Daimyo (territorial landowners) traveling to and from Tokaido increased, and when a checkpoint was established in Hakone, Mishima-juku began to play a role in the defense of Edo.
In addition, Mishima-juku was located at the intersection of the Tokaido Highway, which connects east and west, and the Shimoda Highway and Koshu Highway, which connect north and south, and became a point of exchange for the cultures and industries of various regions.
